China’s Lincoln Zephyr Proves There Is Still A Place For Sedans

The Lincoln Zephyr may only be sold in China but it shows that Ford/Lincoln can still build a good sedan, despite the cancellation of all its sedans in North America a few years ago.

The 2022 Zephyr was unveiled at last November’s Guangzhou Auto Show and is slightly longer than the current Ford Mondeo. It has a lengthy wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114 inches), a touch longer than the 2,850 mm (112.2-inches) of the 2020 Ford Fusion, and was recently put through its paces by Wheelsboy.

We’re sure that not everyone will be won over by the exterior styling of the Zephyr but it’s hard to argue against its space-age interior that looks just as premium and high-end as some more expensive competitors.

Key to the Lincoln’s forward-looking cabin is the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the 27-inch ‘coast-to-coast’ touchscreen that stretches the width of the dashboard. This display supports various multi-touch gestures and has a plethora of customizable viewing options. Powering the system is Lincoln’s Constellation Human Machine Interface (HMI).

In this review, we can see that the 27-inch display is very responsive to touch and seems relatively easy to use, even though the reviewer notes that the UI found in the Ford Evos is a little simpler and more straightforward to use. The rest of the cabin feels much more sophisticated than any Ford, however.

Lincoln has also equipped the 2022 Zephyr with the Co-Pilot 360 2.0 and ActiveGlide systems that allow for Level 2+ driving assistance capabilities.

Powering the Zephyr is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 246 hp and 277 lb-ft (376 Nm) of torque. This engine is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. While the reviewer notes that the Zephyr certainly doesn’t feel sporty, it fills its objective of being a comfortable cruiser.
